The sense of a great past envelopes you in the former Central Provinces of India. This vast area is filled with monuments telling stories of empires and kingdoms, of warriors and architects. Exploring the varied and colourful history of this territory is the theme of this tour. Famous temples, great forts and small villages await you.

DELHI. DAZZLING SIGHTS AND RICKSHAW RIDES

A day touring the wonderful contrasting sights of Old and New Delhi; the Jama Masjid Mosque, Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb and Qutab Minar Tower before driving past New Delhi buildings.

SUNSET OVER THE TAJ MAHAL – AGRA

On the way to Agra your driver will take you to Sikandara. Experience a breathtaking sunset tour of the incomparable Taj Mahal. Next day, view the splendours of the beautiful Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah and the striking Agra Fort. An afternoon at leisure or perhaps an excursion to Fatehpur Sikri.

EPIC FORTS, EROTIC TEMPLES – GWALIOR AND KHAJURAHO

A short train journey takes you to Gwalior; tour the mighty hilltop fort, on a sandstone precipice high above the surrounding plain, and the Jas Vilas Museum. Then it is on to Khajuraho. This small village has a fine collection of temples, some depicting scenes from the Kama Sutra.

ORCHHA AND BHOPAL

The palace and tombs of Bundela kings dominate the edge of Orchha’s Betwa River. From Jhansi a train will take you to the ‘garden city’ of Bhopal. From here visit Sanchi, one of the best preserved Buddhist sites and, if you wish, the Neolithic site of Bhimbethaka.

MAHESWAR

Stay in the home of the former royal family; explore Maheshwar’s wonderful riverside fort, visit temples or simply walk along the banks of the Narmada River. A full day in Mandu, the largest standing fortified city in the world. Take time to sit by the lakes or wander through the groves and gardens.
